Balaklava – cape Ajya
Black sea at coast of the Crimean peninsula surprisingly hospitable – warm and pure.
The Black Sea diving is not Egypt, not Maldives, Tunis or Australia. But, nevertheless, here again there are many interesting dive-sites. And the good soft climate and the fine nature quite favor to it. In sea depths of Black sea there are no huge coral reeves and exotic animals. But here there is a set of places, worthy studying. These are numerous grottoes and caves with steep walls. They are covered by plural colonies actinium and various seaweed. And under huge boulders crabs skip various on coloring and the sizes. Round you the big and small flights and flocks of multi-colored fishes scurry about. It is quite often possible to meet dolphins and a shark катран. And in the bottom important sit scorpens. Depths of Southern Crimea are attractive to diving to all divers, both skilled, and a beginner. The Black Sea coast of Southern Crimea involves in itself many divers, first of all with an abundance of various reliefs and sea-bottom landscapes. This variety of relief is caused by tectonic breaks and eruptions of volcanoes. It was accompanied by emission of a considerable quantity of beautiful stones, such, as: onyx, agate, lazurite and many other things. Diving in Crimea attracts here many fans of wreck-diving. Them here big set. Ships in these parts sank throughout millenia. Their accessory has very wide geography. It were Turkish and Greek, Italian and German, Russian and French ships. On the mission of ships were trading and passenger, and as military. The age of wrecks fluctuates from several tens to several hundreds years. And depth on which wrecks - from fifteen to hundred and more meters. Many good and very interesting dive-sites in Balaklava and Sevastopol area. You can make dives in grottoes on open water and on different depth, in sea caves, on remains of ancient settlements and on wrecks.
Long time the area Balaklava has been closed, and it was almost impossible to imagine diving in this most interesting water area. The beauty of mountains, rocks, juniper woods and pines of reserve Ajya and natural boundary shakes Injir.
Avenue of anchors.
By caring hands of divers in this place have been collected and laid out in avenue of an anchor of various epoch. Depths to 15 meters.
Eaves.
Moving towards cape Ajya, it is possible to dive near the first steep rock of natural boundary the Injir. In process of movement to a ground the wall hangs more and more. Depth gradually decreases to 6-8 meters. Here it is possible to go aside the seas where on equal, a sandy bottom boulders lie the freakish form.
Ekaterinesky grotto.
Depth on entrance – 9 m. the Bottom rocky, c gradual reduction of depth to 4 meters and narrowing of a grotto to impassable. If to begin dive from a corner of a vertical wall and to move along it, it is possible to get to entrance of grotto. A grotto (its surface part) high enough is more true and deep, interested persons can emerge and will take pleasure to look a grotto in half-waters. At the end of a grotto where rocks start to be closed, there is a source of fresh water with which the underwater part of cape Ajya abounds. At mixture of fresh and salty water it is possible to observe such phenomenon as galocline.
Ushakovsky wall.
Unique place for the diving, formed by the vertical mountains which are going down downwards from height of 300 m from a sea level on depth to 70 m. The wall it is spotted by grottoes and the crevices located at level of 10-15 m. It earlier was range on which soldires admiral Ushakov was spent by doctrines, improving the skill in shooting from ship guns. Now let out kernels lie on depth more than 35-40 m.
In caves, some of which through, it is possible to see stalagmites, cockleshells and seaweed. In one of grottoes there are exits of sources of fresh water.
The fauna of this place is extraordinary rich for Black sea. Here there are flights gorbyls, a trout, a sea cat and others.
Cave of Dragon.
The cave is on depth hardly more than 20 meters around cape Ajya. The cave long also is focused almost horizontally, with a small bias in a direction to a ground. And that is why this place name "Dragon". Already near to an exit it is possible to come across an unusual rock (or a stone) which is as though attached to the arch. In the light of a lantern it bears a strong resemblance to a large head of a dragon with a mouth. Tremendous impression.
The Forgotten world.
Is near to cape Ajya. Represents a freakish heap of stones with set of grottoes which creates interesting and even a fantastic underwater landscape. Depth 15-18м.
Cape Fiolent.
Cape Fiolent - the most beautiful, legendary and surprising place on the originality in vicinities of Sevastopol. Some Ancient Greek myths, for example, about fine Ifigenii, Oreste and Pilade scientists connect with history of these rocks from alternating yellow and dark gray limestone (Fiolent – in translate from Turkic "Tiger cape"). The underwater world involves with a unique relief of a bottom, with beautiful stouns in the cleanest water, canyons and as if the present harbors with tiny moorings. On level of 12 m, near to a cape extremity, there is an input in a twisting through cave is «Diana's Grotto». Near to cape in the sea there are two rocks with the same name — Orest and Pilat. In one of them there is a through grotto, in the extent about 15 m. Entrance is on depth of 13 m.
Around cape Grape from a sea-bottom the stone ridge rises and practically concerns a surface. If to look around it is possible to see the rests of the ships which have broken about these reeves. These are boards, frames, ceramics splinters.During diving in cape Fiolent water area all the most interesting waits for you on depths from 8 до 18 m. Around the set of fish — a mullet, ruffs, bull-calves, and among stones are looked through the big crabs and cancers-eremites. Currents can be strong.
Grotto-siphon.
On underwater part of steep rocks of cape Fiolent it is possible to meet set of unique grottoes, caves, stones and natural deepenings. The soft calcareous breed of Fiolent which are constantly washed away by currents and storm, forms absolutely unique outlines of coast and its underwater part. Here there is very interesting grotto-siphon which brightly illustrates all advantages of these places. Distance to coast no more – 150 meters. Depth in a descent point – 15 meters. A bottom – sand, the average sizes boulders, a small pebble.
Sevastopol – cape Chersonese
Chersonese-Taurian.
Near antique Chersonese and in the Quarantine bay at the bottom a lot of antique ceramics – ware splinters, the rests of amphoras, a clay tile. There are kernels, a case-shot. It is a lot of anchors, at what of various epoch – from antique to rather modern.
Anchors, grottoes ("Landmark")
Depths – from 6 to 18 m. Relief – large stones, sand. Here two small grottoes, one consists as though of two arches in two levels. Among stones it is possible to see splinters of antique pottery, it is a lot of handles from amphoras, a tile. From living creatures - it is a lot of bull-calves, sea ruffs.
Ancient port.
In the Quarantine bay was Hersonessky port. Depth – from 6 to 12 meters, a bottom – silt, sand, a small stone, seaweed. On a ground – it is a lot of splinters of antique ceramics of two-thousand-year prescription. In a direction to ancient port depth smoothly decreases, visibility, unfortunately, too. Ceramics, splinters of amphoras, handles, mouths from amphoras meets more and more.
Hersonessky Lighthous (Cape Chersonese).
One of the most outstanding in the high sea of parts of coast. Usually, on this dive-site you are waited a current from weak to very strong, therefore here it is a lot of living creatures, including most often here you can meet a flounder and slopes, and greenfinches who in transparent water create sensation of the tropical sea. Depths in this area from 5 to 50 meters.
Omega bay.
At the corner of an exit from a bay one of the best dive-sites for beginners is located. Depths from 4 to 15 meters, white sand with islets of a stone and seaweed – here it is light even at the most adverse visibility. And when visibility reaches 10-15 meters multi-colored small fishes in turquoise water to water create sensation of immersing in the present tropical sea.
The stone ships.
Such strange name is a place has received from set singl standing on sandy bottom stone rocks, under the form reminding the ships which have stiffened in a stone. Depths from 15 to 24 meters.
Ominous rocks.
10-12 meters leaving from depth breakages some canyons among which it is possible to swim as in a huge labyrinth. This site has received the name from a play of light and shade – when the sun comes for clouds, rocks look very ominously :) In small grottoes, in the light of a torch, have stood large greenfishes and ruffs. In grottoes and deepenings often enough there is large a croaker, flocks of a mullet. Depths to 24 meters.
The Cossack bay.
In Cossack bay more often at the bottom it is possible to find out the rests of ship-wrecks of former times, which are washed away from a ground by storm. More often this dive-site is visited after dive aboard the plane Dorenje.26 located on depth of 20 meters. Visibility in the Cossack bay quite often happens not so good, but true adventurers it never stopped. Depths of 18-20 meters.
Underwater canyon.
Having passed a navigable mark on a beam of the Hersonessky Lighthous and moving to the south, on depth of 15 m it is possible to see a stone ridge which is stretched in direction to the southeast. On depth of 22 meters already you feel yourself at the bottom of a deep canyon. Rocks steeply rise upwards. Through some meters depth starts to decrease and rocks smooth out a little.
35 battery.
Any war hasn't passed by this coast. On depths from 8 to 25 meters in a heap of stones it is possible to meet the weapon rests, shells, kernels and other fancifully not clear designs of obviously military origin.
